Art and Design
Museums have always acted as a stimulus for artists and designers – from William Morris to the catwalk couture designs of Versace.
A collection is always far more than an assemblage of artefacts; it provides a window to explore the work of artists from the past, their skills, expertise and desires.
Here at the Royal Armouries our collection provides a challenging environment for artists to explore the wider issues of contemporary society through study, creativity and discussion.
We use a combination of slides, object study and practical activities to explore diverse themes.
Simulate debate by considering sensitive issues, such as;
- The function and role of artists in contemporary wars.
- Do artists have a moral obligation to tell the truth?
- Question the involvement artists in the creation of new types of warfare i.e. camouflage.
- The changing role of artists through time and across cultures.
Students can be inspired by:
- Analysing the unique nature of handcrafted embossed Tudor armour that once belonged to the elite of society
- The mass produced machine aesthetic of the camouflage uniform. That it is no longer simply camouflage but now also a signifier.
- How the military ‘look’ has been re-intrepretated through generations of designers, subverted by peace protesters and reborn through street fashion.
- Reinterpret the line, pattern, bold shapes, usage of light and movement in their own artwork.
What materials do we use?
Materials such as copper, wire, clay, mudroc, card and fabric can be used to explore the form and function of our collection.
Students can use this wide variety of media to create either individual or group art works. We can also provide an exhibition area for your students’ artwork within the museum, for your completed project work.
